By search engine optimization we mean the process of trying to obtain the best position, across a range of search engines, by making the most effective use of the elements that go to make up a website.

When a search engine evaluates or "ranks" a website it does not consider the website as a whole but rather each of the webpages that go to make up that website.

The factors that are considered by a search engine when it evaluates a webpage can be divided into on-webpage characteristics and off-webpage characteristics. Both of these characteristics or criteria are equally important

At Hindsight I T Solutions we take these factors into account when designing the pages for your website.

On webpage characteristics.

By on webpage characteristics we mean any elements used in the creation of a webpage that can be adjusted to improve the "worth" of the page when ranked by a search engine. This includes both the elements that are visible to the website visitor and embedded elements which are normally only read by a search engine robot.

Visible elements include such things as the webpage title, links, the relevance of the webpage, Keyword proximity and keyword density. Embedded elements include such things as meta-description, the level of a header H1, H2, H3 etc.

Off-webpage characteristics.

Off webpage characteristics refer to all links not only from pages of other websites but also the links between webpages that go to make up your own website.

The search engine Google uses the term "PageRank" as method of evpressing the relative weight of off webpage criteria and is measured on a non-linear scale of 0 to 10.
